Probably the most bulletproof line of sleds Arctic Cat ever built. the only weak link I can possibly think of is the fan cooled 340's and 440's up to 1981 have a standard double lip rubber seal for a center seal. You may have a good regulator but the wires are shorting out together before the regulator.i.e. it is allowing all of the voltage to bypass the regulator and go right into the rest of the wiring for the sled. Artic Cat 400 Ignition Problem I just took my 06 Artic Cat 400 apart and found that there is defective wiring on the stator harness. Artic Cat used wire that in time shrinks. When this happens the wire pokes out of it's cover and becomes exposed. This happens where the wire bends when it comes out of the side cover. Listening to it a second time it does sound like the valves are a bit out of spec, luckily you have the 2000-2005 style plastics. You can set the valves by pulling the seat, 2 side plastics, pulling the fuel tank bolts sliding the tank back and out of the way, removing the top engine mount, and pulling the 2 valve covers. Long story short I found the crank seal on the mag side leaking, crank needed to be reworked, decided to put new top end in and go through it all. . Started testing stator and found brown to green at 2-4 ohms. Brand new aftermarket stator is junk so I found a used one in the area which came off a running sled and checked at 450 and 46 at .
I just recently purchased a 2005 Arctic Cat 500. It always started quickly and run fairly smooth. On a recent back road trip, it died on me and I could figure out the problem. I thought maybe a bad battery. Anyway, I cleaned up the corroded posts & charged the battery. When I put it in the next day, it started very quickly and ran well to get home. Test ride it. I have a 2000 440Z SnoPro. You cannot get an aftermarket can or pipe. Reason is because there is no room for improved power, so nobody makes them. Arctic Cat maxed out the performance by advanced timing and tuning the pipe. However, you can get clutch kits to change your powerband. I have the Black Magic Heartthrob clutch kit in the 2000 440Z .
